What’s On Your Workdesk Wednesday #272

This time last week I was on top of the world. Well, not quite. I was at the top of the Wrekin. The view was worth the climb. Beautiful Shropshire all around. A contender for #7 in the 2014 Summertime Photography Scavenger Hunt: a rural landscape.

I’m back home now, after a 325 mile round trip to spend a couple of days with an old college friend and his lovely family. This is what was on my kitchen table yesterday afternoon. All the pieces cut and marked for a skirt.

I bought this stretch denim a while ago, because I loved the purplish colour of it. Once washed, it ended up with weird lines all over it and, despite throwing it back in the wash again and ironing it to death, they won’t disappear. It was removed from the machine promptly and hung straight on the line so not sure why it happened.

Getting momentarily distracted by children, while doing that ironing, resulted in this. Oops! This is the wrong side, which is more of a magenta colour, showing the stretch thread. I was ironing on the right (more cottony) side and kept the iron still a little too long. I did think about using this as the right side, but I’m not so keen on the colour and I don’t like the slightly synthetic appearance.

I managed to avoid the worst of the lines (and the scorch mark!) when cutting out the pieces, but I’m not sure how well it will wash and wear. We’ll see. In a way it’s a good thing, because I’m not worried about messing it up, when I put the skirt together now. I’ll look on it as a trial run.

Just got to master those pesky zips. More on that subject on Friday, when I share what I made from the pieces I was cutting out a couple of Wednesdays ago. For now, it’s over to Julia’s place, to see what everyone else has been up to.

No, I haven't tried gluing any zips yet, because having not got my act organised, the only adhesive I have to hand us Araldite. Do you think that'll do??? Lol. But I am going to give your stuff a whirl.
I think you're very daring sewing stretch fabric.....shivers....hope it goes well. I like that denim, bet you end up wearing it all the time! Did you get the latest Love Sewing mag? There was a free dress pattern and I thought of you!

I have a pair of stretch jeans which have that lined effect after washing..drives me nuts. But...haven't stopped wearing them! Binet the skirt will end up being a really great everyday use one that you'll wear to death!
The zip insertion isn't too pesky is it really...I think it's the non-stretch of the zip going into a stretch fabric that would put me off...talk about giving up at tiny hurdles!!

Oh - how frustrating - but glad you managed to miss most of it when cutting out. Will the marks disappear into the seam allowance? I also think you are doing really well tackling stretchy fabric. Brilliant job! Trust it all comes out just fine and you enjoy wearing the finished skirt.
Thanks for visiting already. Yes - I'm really looking forward to Saturday and a wedding treat. Just this minute finished my own skirt - so after a visit from the social care team to |John I shall be off into Llandudno to find a blouse. No time to tackle making one of those before Saturday!!!
That view is definitely a contender for the No 7!!
Take care. God bless.

Ga! How annoying. It does look like a really great colour I think and you know, as soon as you say stretch I think ooh, yes, that'd be nice..

I made a dress for Maxine once in similar denim. Quite a tricky pattern and took ages. First time she washed it thats just what it looked like - flippin annoying!! Just leaving a quick hello from Twiglet and Wipso as Annie hasn't any broadband in her new home yet!!

I'm afraid you cannot avoid those faded lines on denim, it's just the nature of the fabric.
Have a great week and happy crafting, Angela x 49

Love that denim--it's almost a periwinkle color. Really puts me in the mood to make a skirt! Happy WOYWW! Sandy Leigh #51

Hi Fiona, thanks for the good wishes- its wonderful to know you have so many friends rooting for you, really is. Denim is such a pesky fabric sometimes, but I love it dearly, lol. Have a great week, Hugs, Shaz #16 xxx

Oh I do hate zips. Having said that I hate buttons and button holes more :) even if my machine does then "automatically" it's just not something I'm good at. I'm all about the slip on and elastic when it comes to clothes sewing LOL! Nothing fitted, nothing curvy - straight lines all the way...
:)

Happy WOYWW!

As it is Denim everyone will think it a new designer style fabric and start looking in shops for it. You could always slash it and fray it. That way it will be like the jeans they pay so much for. you never know with fabric.

On top of the Wreakin! you brought back some memories for me. I lived 'up there' for 15 years.
Zips... I have to say I don't mind them at all. Slowly, slowly, pin and tack. Good luck x

That skirt will probably end up being an all time favourite. I might have been tempted to do a decorative stitch around the scorch and make a never to be forgotten feature. Lol
