A proper old fashioned shop. Here when I was a child and still serving the local community forty years on.

I’m joining in with Abi’s monthly meme and still keeping up with Photo A Day. Yay!

PS Did you spot the name of the Hairdresser Abi?

A little piece of family history

I had no idea what I was going to blog about today. I taught a card class this morning in Mere and by happy chance, one of our Meadow Barn group of friends was in the area and able to come and join me. It was a beautiful sunny morning and, as I walked back to the car afterwards, I was thinking, ’G is for….what?’

I thought of the Grove Building on the other side of town. Shame it’s bin day!

20141007_122944

It was built in 1891 as an annexe to the school, with a gift of money from local benefactress, Julia Chafyn Grove. During the First World War it became a Red Cross hospital, staffed by volunteers.

So what’s the family connection? It’s where my Mum went to school, in the fifties.

I’m really enjoying the October prompts for Photo A Day. Today’s letter encouraged me to go out of my way, to find something interesting (to me anyway) to photograph and I’ve recorded another little story for my children.

Me on Monday

What a difference a day makes. The weather set in last night and we woke to pouring rain and fierce winds this morning. Once the children had left for school I got on with my usual Monday chores. Then I settled down for the first episode of a new show, Craft Daily.* A friend was demonstrating how to make a skirt today.

….froth, in the bottom of my coffee cup.

This afternoon the sun came out and I enjoyed a catch up with a good friend who’s recently moved house. Home again just in time for the children. Greeted by the smell of the slow cooker doing its thing. Ah, gotta love Autumn, now it’s here.

Waving to Sian.

*If you missed it, it will be shown again on Thursday at 7pm.

Photo A Day ~ October round up #1

Several of my friends follow the Fat Mum Slim Photo A Day prompts and there have been a few occasions when I have had good intentions, but fallen by the wayside! The list for October is a little different and I thought it would work well for Blogtoberfest. I’ve kept up so far. Only four days in, that’s not much to shout about!

Today….

….is a brand new day and a brand new year.

Today: Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain.

P1020474

There will be some of you out there thinking, ‘She shouldn’t have been doing her washing today.’ I know it’s supposed to mean that I’ll be doing it every day for the rest of the year, but with two children, a mechanic for a husband and being a very messy baker and soup maker myself, there’s nothing new there!

Perhaps you don’t do laundry today, because you believe in the more morbid superstition that says you will wash away a family member. Having grown up in a house with an extremely superstitious Father, I don’t subscribe to this theory either. Don’t worry though, this was washed yesterday, while it poured, just hung out today.

I’ve got a few shots of my washing line taken over the last couple of years. It may not seem like a very interesting subject for a photo, but it’s fun to see the different clothes that my children have worn. Clothes which haven’t necessarily appeared in photos taken of them. Especially now they are camera shy teens.

Above is a well loved outfit of my daughter’s: stripy top and skinny jeans. The pink (not a favourite colour but the top is turquoise) just showing, is the bottom half of some new pyjamas, that she had for Christmas, featuring Animal from the muppets. A nickname from when she was tiny (and loud) and had an abundance of wild curls.

Today, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to write about. I only managed two blog posts during December, but I’ve written before about what that time of year usually means for us. This photo a day challenge from Fat Mum Slim was my starting point and I digressed from there!

I’m not committing to taking a photo every single day, but I like the openness of the prompts and I will dip in whenever the fancy takes me. As for other challenges, I declared myself here on my blog last January and have failed epically with most of them, so we’ll see. What are you planning to participate in for 2013?

Wishing all my readers (if I have any left) and friends a happy and creative New Year.
