Hello from a rather damp Dorset today. The school holidays are a week old now and we have been enjoying glorious sunshine for the most part. The change in the weather gives us a chance to spend some time indoors being creative.
My girl chose textiles as one of her design taster subjects last year. She went in full of enthusiasm and came out feeling very frustrated. I’m aiming to redress the balance over the next few weeks. We started with a headband cut from an old dress.
She did a great job of sewing the slightly curved seams and turning it inside out. When it came to adding the elastic we didn’t have the right width (isn’t that always the way!) so we moved onto a bit of hand sewing. She drew out a pattern onto card, before cutting the felt. Anyone recognise the Studio Ghibli character?
I made the most of having the sewing machine out, to sew up the pieces of my purse. Just the scary gluing part to do now. More on this project another day.
I’m off to Julia’s Place to link up and see what everyone has been doing this week. Care to join us?
I love to see young crafters at work...have fun together.

ReplyDeleteGreat work on the headband! We're massive Studio Ghibli fans in this house so yes, I know the little character! I hope your gal has fun with the sewing..I was turned off at school, so can relate to her frustration. But having fun is the most important.
ReplyDeleteAnd Thank You for all that you did at the Crop..it's good to know that we all helped in a small way :-)
Hugs, LLJ 20 xx

ReplyDeleteI very much wish I was a better sewer ... it's a great skill! Have fun together - it's times like that your daughter will cherish when she gets older ... x
ReplyDeleteshe's a very lucky girl to have a mama to help out! I don't know one end of a sewing machine from the other, so poor E had to figure it all out for herself...

Look forward to seeing the finished articles. Glad your dd has you to help - I always learnt far more from my grandmother and mother than they ever managed to teach me at school x
ReplyDeleteWell done you - teaching your daughter to sew - I taught mine many years ago - and they have branched out in all sorts of directions with it!! Great stuff! Gorgeous things being made. Are you taking part in the photo scavenger hunt as well??
ReplyDeleteHave a great week. Thanks for dropping in.

That is the sweetest fabric! Oh, and DD is a huge SG fan - even the ones I am not so keen on. She would know the character immediately :)
ReplyDeleteHappy WOYWW!

Great little sewing projects. I seem to remember having to give my Maxine lots of support when she was at school but it paid off - she loves to craft/sew now - age 33!!! x Jo #11
ReplyDeleteBrings back memories of when my Mom taught me to sew. Such a great talent to pass on to he younger ones.

Its fab to have something to share with your children, and she will I'm sure, get more knowledge & enjoyment from learning with you than at school. No matter how good they are, there are other kids they have to give time to, you can have a great one on one. Have a great week, Hugs, Shaz xx #22
ReplyDeleteLooks like some fun sewing happening at your place!
ReplyDeleteoh good for you, there's nothing like crappy teaching to put you off a subject for life. Ask me about doing sums.
ReplyDeleteHope you can encourage her sufficiently, love the idea for the project.
Sounds like you are having fun :) I have to say I hate sewing (bad me) I can sew but tend to avoid it except for on layouts lol. I spent half the day playing playstation and pool! Which is very difficult on one of those small tables (that is my excuse for Kieran always beating me anyway!) Hopefully the sun will be back out tomorrow :)
ReplyDeleteI must admit that I was a little bit pleased to have some rain so we could stay in and craft! I don't recognise the character but its a great headband!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you share your passion for crafting with your daughter and I love the cute headband and especially love the fabric you are using for your purse. Can't wait to see the end result. Have a great week and Happy WOYWW! Danie #25
ReplyDeleteHow lovely to be able to share your sewing, enjoy!

Lovely to be able to spend the time one on one with her and the sewing machine, think it is the best way to learn such skills and the headband is coming along nicely! Love your purse too! Annette #1 for the first time in 4 years!
ReplyDeleteI remember sewing sessions with my mom and how I went from frustration to elation. Ann #114
ReplyDeleteGr, I get so annoyed when teachers and lessons but kids off sewing/crafting/art. She has a good teacher now :)
