On the first Sunday of the month, Sian plays host to anyone who has a tale to tell or a photo (that tells a story) to share.
I didn’t have a story in mind for this month, so I did what I usually do on these occasions and turned to the old photo album.
This one seemed like a good choice…..
That’s my Mum right up there on the throne. We’re not certain of the year, but Mum thinks she was nine or ten years old, when she was chosen to be the May Queen.
It’s not a tradition that was followed at my primary school or my daughter’s, so we were sure to write on the back before tucking it away in the album again.
Have you got a May Day (or any other) story of your own? If you have, then head on over to Sian’s place, where we’ll all be happy to see you.
No, it's not celebrated here at all - well to my knowledge.
ReplyDeleteRoyalty in the family hey?!
May Day is celebrated very big here....our town hosts the Jack in the Green celebrations....but I don't think we have a May queen.
ReplyDeleteLove your old photo.
What a fabulous photo. That really is a brilliant treasure :0)
ReplyDeleteI don't know about any May Day celebrations now but how lucky you are to have that photo of the past May Queen!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! What a lovely photo of her, too :) No such celebrations where I live now or where I grew up, sadly... But I was such a tomboy that I wouldn't ever have been chosen anyway!!
ReplyDeleteHow very lovely! It's a beautiful picture and really something to be proud of. I've often wished we did something like that round here. It seems like a lot of fun. Thanks for this little gem of a story Fiona
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely picture to have,as reminder of a tradition that certainly seems to be dying out!
ReplyDeleteAlison xx
we never had a May Queen when i grew up. The school were we are now does and it is celebrated every year. Great story and a lovely photo :)

what a fab story to go with a great heritage photo.
ReplyDeleteenjoyed catching up with your blog. Not done WOYWW for too long now.
What a fantastic photo! No May Day stories in my family that I know of.
ReplyDeleteHmm next door's gardener has headed off to Scrappy Jackie's for the jack in the green celebrations. Otherwise I don't know of any celebrations here for the first of May. Well, except the birthday ones that is!
ReplyDeleteno, we don't really celebrate May Day, although we did at the women's college I went to in the late 70s. Love the photo!
ReplyDeleteI must admit I don't know anywhere that really celebrates it, which is such a shame. I adore the photo though :)
ReplyDeleteI love the photograph and the memory. It has reminded me that I was Rose Queen one year in Manchester when we had Whit-week walks. I don't imagine they have them anymore.
ReplyDeleteI bet you treasure those old photographs.
Oh wow what a lovely memory, will you scrap it? What a pretty little girl your mum was :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo ... just love it. Old photos are so nice and tell such a wonderful story.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of May Day, but it is not celebrated around here.
ReplyDeleteI love the photo. There is so much going on in it. It makes me wonder about all the details. How they chose the May Queen? How the ceremony proceeded? What they all did on the day as there is such a variety in dresses? Love stuff like this. Thanks for sharing :-)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous picture. We don't have May queen but my kids school used to put up a may pole dance.
ReplyDeleteFabulous picture - and yes we did have May Queens and Maypoles when I was growing up! (as you already know - thanks for popping in)J x
ReplyDeletewhat a lovely photo!

ReplyDeleteWOW - wonderful photo!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely gorgeous photo! And how perfect for the time of year!
ReplyDeleteWe don't celebrate over here in Canada (at least not that I've ever heard of). Wow - that picture is a real treasure.
