Storytelling Sunday ~ Lazy Days of Summer

From the days when summers seemed endless and the sun always shone.

When we got up in the morning, met the other children in our little close and spent the day in the fields behind our homes. Only returning when we got hungry.

These photos triggered a whole host of memories from childhood summers. The boy on the left was literally the boy next door, next to him is my younger brother, then the boy who lived ‘up the top’ and lastly my nine year old self. Look at those flares! Well it was the seventies.

On my back I’m carrying a rucksac of sorts, that I made from a curtain remnant my Gran gave me. Inside was an exercise book filled with the cards that came free in boxes of tea, depicting wild flowers and birds. There would have been I-Spy books too (remember those?) and a container to collect wild flowers in, for pressing later.

I could go on…..and on. Happy days.

More Lovin’ Summer than Summer Lovin’, which is Sian’s theme for Storytelling Sunday this month. There will be plenty mores tales to read over there. Why not pop in and maybe share one of your own.

  1. Don't our summers of old sound idyllic....shame children today don't get that freedom. We played in Epping Forest all day....only coming home when we got hungry.

  2. Children of today seem to have so much but in fact they really do miss out on much more. Let's turn back the clocks for them. :-)

  5. Awww how lovely. I wish I had photos from the 70s - we were so lucky my grandparents lived on a farm and use to spend the whole of the summer with them, such happy days.

  7. Great photographs of happy summer days. Those days seemed endless then, occupied with friends. My two daughters were never inside the house watching tv as a lot of children are now.

  8. Its funny but your photo reminded me of endless hours out playing with other kids in my childhood but I can't imagine letting my kids go out alone anytime soon! The colours in your photos reminded me of my old long gone photos too.

  19. Summers were always like that when we were children, weren't they?

Ah, 1979 I remember it well. September 1979 I started work in Midland Bank, 79 Western Road Brighton! I was 16 and fresh out of school, seems like only yesterday

  20. This is the one thing I miss about moving back to the city, not being able to let my kids run free and only come home when they got hungry. **sigh** city life really doesn't allow this. It is a shame that we have to be so protective of our children. Your story is how it should be!

  22. What great photos & memories. I had to smile reading about the free cards in the tea boxes becase we are always on the look out for old cards like that as Robbie is an avid trading card collector! Oh for a peak inside that bag.
