Today it was the Wimbledon Men’s Final and it got me thinking of another Wimbledon final back in 1985.
I was getting ready for a big adventure, later that year, with a group of friends and part of the preparations involved raising money for the trip. We had a stall at the Gold Hill Fair and took it in turns to man it throughout the day.
During our time off we sneaked round to a friend’s house to watch the tennis. We got totally caught up in the excitement that a boy our own age might be about to win Wimbledon. That boy was Boris Becker and he did indeed win that year and we may have been just a tiny bit late getting back to the stall for our shift!
It was quite a climb back up Gold Hill and if you are of a certain age you will know this, because the cobbled hill was featured in the 1973 Hovis advert. What you may not know, is that this famous view is to be found in Dorset and not a northern town as the advert implies.
In spite of the distraction we raised the money we needed to fund the working part of our trip and what a trip it was, but that’s a story for another day.
To read lots more stories and perhaps share one of your own, pop over to Sian’s place, where you’ll be made very welcome.
That's some hill....I do recognize it....and always thought it was 'up north'....but no wonder you had trouble getting back on time!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for that - I remember it well too.
ReplyDeleteWow - I'm of a certain age and recognise that hill! I remember Becker's win too - glad you made it back eventually!
ReplyDeleteI am so envious of all you people who are so close to Wimbledon, but I do not envy that hill! Thanks for sharing! (and stopping by my blog and leaving a comment!)
ReplyDeletethat hill was used in a challenge for the Biggest loser a few years ago it looks like hard work!
ReplyDeleteI was 12 the year Becker first won Wimbledon - it was quite a sensation over here too ... well, we are very keen tennis followers .... that hill was a price to pay though - sheesh, it looks steep!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful photo! I'm certain walking that hill daily would keep anyone fit:)
ReplyDeleteOh yes! I remember that advert well. And no I didn't know it was in Dorset. How funny is that? I can remember that final too - that was a few weeks after I finished my A Levels.
ReplyDeleteThanks for joining Storytelling Sunday with a lovely memory, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about the trip.
ooh, that is one steep climb, I don't envy you. Stunning village though and now I know it is in Dorset.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Hovis ads, but didn't realise it was in Dorset either! Great story....I obviously missed it yesterday, so glad you left a comment on mine!
ReplyDeleteAlison xx
Being from the The States we have absolutely nothing that looks like this, it seems so quaint and magical ...a gorgeous photo and lovely story TFS
ReplyDeleteGreat story! I was also a major Boris Becker fan!!
ReplyDeleteOh My! I'd never be able to make it up that hill and cobblestone at that. :) No wonder you were a tad late getting back.
